REI to close on Black Friday, encourages employees to make outdoor plans

KENT, Wash. (AP) — Outdoor retailer Recreational Equipment, Inc., known as REI, has announced it will buck Black Friday and close its 143 stores on the Friday after Thanksgiving. The Kent-based co-op told members the plan in an email Monday, saying instead of working they'll pay their employees on Nov. 27 to be outside. REI also created the social media hashtag #optoutside and a website where people can share their outdoorsy plans for that day.

Gov't bans e-cigarettes in airline passengers' checked bags

WASHINGTON (AP) — A new federal rule forbids airline passengers from packing electronic cigarettes or other battery-operated electronic smoking devices in their checked bags to protect against in-flight fires. The rule still allows e-cigarettes in carry-on bags, but passengers cannot recharge the devices while on the plane.

GM recalling 1.4M cars; oil leaks can cause engine fires

DETROIT (AP) — For the third time in seven years, General Motors is recalling cars that can leak oil and catch fire, in some instances damaging garages and homes. The recall, which covers 1.4 million vehicles dating to the 1997 model year, is needed because repairs from the first two recalls didn't work. More than 1,300 cars caught fire after they were fixed by dealers, the company said.

American Airlines picks Fort Worth site for new headquarters

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — American Airlines Group Inc. is moving its headquarters but staying in the same Fort Worth neighborhood. Executives of the Fort Worth-based airline told employees this week that American will build a new home about a 2-mile drive from its current headquarters. American will remain close to its biggest hub, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, and keep a Fort Worth address.

Toyota recalls 6.5 million vehicles for window switch defect

TOKYO (AP) — Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 6.5 million vehicles worldwide for a defective power window switch that can overheat, melt and lead to fires. One injury in the U.S., a person who suffered a burn on the hand, has been reported. Toyota has also received 11 reports of cases in which the switch or part of the car door burned — seven in North America, two in Japan and two in other areas — the Japanese automaker said Wednesday.
