Rockwall bathroom ordinance fails after lack of support

The proposed bathroom ordinance in the city of Rockwall failed after lack of support Monday night.

The motion failed after no one on the council seconded the mayor’s call for a vote.

The ordinance would’ve determined which bathroom transgender people could use.

The ordinance is similar to those approved in other states. It applied to all public restrooms and would've required people to use the restroom of the gender of their birth certificate.

Those who refused could’ve been fined $500. Businesses that allow someone to use a bathroom of the opposite sex would have also been fined.

The mayor of Rockwall and other supporters of the law talk about protecting children. But many members of the LGBT community these kinds of measures needlessly discriminate.

The mayor was the only person that supported the ordinance.
