During cross-examination, the defense focused on security lapses, noting that external and internal doors were often left unlocked because substitute teachers were not provided with keys. The defense also challenged Reyes' consistency by comparing his current testimony about the initial sounds of the shooting to his previous statements during the grand jury proceedings.

Another teacher, Erin Robin, testified to seeing an unidentified officer standing by a school district vehicle during the attack, positioned between her classroom and the ongoing gunfire. The defense used Robin’s sighting to suggest that Gonzales was positioned in a defensive spot between the teacher and the shooter during the massacre.
