Photo released of suspect in triple fatality LBJ Freeway hit-and-run
Police have released a photo of the driver they say hit and killed three men as they tried to change a tire on LBJ Freeway early Sunday.
Jesus Vasquez-Chavarria, 32, was driving a black Chevy Silverado pick-up truck when he ran into three men outside the vehicle about 3:30 a.m., Dallas police say. Vasquez-Chavarria hasn't been taken into custody and is being sought by police.
The three men were pronounced dead at the scene. Two others with them, sitting inside the vehicle, were hurt.
Police say the driver ran off after the crash and left his 12-year-old son behind. The boy was also injured in the crash. The child was later reunited with his mother at the hospital.
The three men killed in the crash were Christopher Pham, 23, David Nguyen, 23, and Hieu Minh Doan, 22.
They had emergency flashers on. They had pulled off onto the side of the road,” explained Dallas Police Sgt. Warren Mitchell. “And it looks like it appeared they had done everything the way they should have. We have these emergency shoulders for individual to pull over, and it looks like they did just that and still horrific accident still occurred.”
“Dealing with one is horrific in itself,” MItchell said. “But to compound it three time is unimaginable.”
Five friends, all but one of them former UT Dallas students, were heading home from a concert in Dallas when Dallas Police say the Toyota Rav 4 they were in got a flat tire.
Pham, 22-year-old Hieu Doan and 23-year-old David Nguyen put the flashers on and got out in the emergency lanes to change it.
A man in the front passenger seat and a woman in back stayed in the car. That’s when, police say, 32-year-old Jesus Chavarria Vasquez hit them in the black The Chevy Silverado then ran, leaving his injured 12-year-old son behind. The man who remained in the car had to be cut out. The woman is in critical condition.
“We do have investigators out pounding the beat trying to look for him,” Mitchell said.
Vasquez-Chavarria -Vasquez will be charged with three counts of manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid when he is captured, police said.
Nguyen family members say David was kind hearted, responsible and loved life. They say he’d just graduated from UTD with a degree in information systems and just got a job in Carrollton. His family members want Vasquez to be held accountable.
Pham says his son was always smiling and was always responsible. He was trying to get into medical school. Pham says he isn’t one to say I love you often. He hopes his son knows how loved he was.
“I don’t do that, but I really, inside me,” he said. “I love him. I love him more than anything. Than anything.”
Anyone knowing the whereabouts of Chavarria-Vasquez is asked to call police.
