Dallas police to hold community meeting following CVS security guard's murder

The interim Dallas police chief will host a Downtown Dallas community meeting after a deadly shooting at a CVS where a security guard was killed.

Two juveniles are in custody for the shooting that happened late Friday night.

Meanwhile, the security guard’s wife says he was a provider who was murdered while trying to do his job.

What we know:

Dallas police say Friday around 11 p.m., Anthony Egeonu was shot while working as a security guard for the CVS Pharmacy on Main Street.

Two juveniles are in custody, but their names are not being released because of their age.

Police have said little about what led up to the shooting, but his family believes he may have approached them before he was shot.

What they're saying:

Octavia Egeonu says she got a call just after midnight Saturday that sent her rushing to help her husband, Anthony.

"His supervisor informed me that Anthony had been shot and that he was in the hospital," she recalled.

The 39-year-old security guard died at the hospital.

"He said, ‘This is never an easy way to say this.’ And he said, ‘I’m sorry,’" recalled his wife. "Any time he works around or sees teenagers, he tries to connect with them, tries to get them to do the right thing."

Friday night, his family says they know he was just doing his job.

Jermain Pipkins says the pain of losing his cousin is indescribable.

One person is dead after a shooting at a CVS Pharmacy in Downtown Dallas on Friday night.

"It’s just a pain and a deep void that will never go away," he said.

In addition to his wife, Anthony leaves behind two daughters and a son.

His wife says it’s the little things she misses the most. She says he’ll be remembered as a protector, a caretaker and all-around great man.

"Anthony had a big heart," said Octavia. "He would help anybody. You call him; he’s coming."

"He was a great man that lived life to the fullest," said Pipkins. "And it’s just sad that that was taken away."

The family hopes that his death is a chance to make a change in the community, especially in the lives of young people.

"We don’t want Anthony’s life to be in vain," said Pipkins. "So how can we take this opportunity to impact kids' lives? Because that’s what he would want."
