Shooting at Dallas CVS
What we know:
Police say they were called to the CVS Pharmacy on Main Street in Downtown Dallas shortly after 11 p.m. on Friday night.
Investigators found one person, later identified as 39-year-old Anthony Egeonu, who had been shot at the location.
Dallas-Fire Rescue took Egeonu to the hospital where he died.
Two juveniles are in custody, Dallas police announced Saturday.
What we don't know:
The names of the juveniles have not been released because of their age.
Police have yet to say what led up to the shooting or what charges the juveniles are facing.
What they're saying:
Egeonu's family said they're devastated by his death and believe things never should have escalated to violence.
His cousin, Marcus Pipkins, said he looked to Egeonu as a mentor and a motivator.
"He was definitely a protector," Pipkins said.
He said Egeouo was a father of three and was big on de-escalation.
"And for this to happen is, like, It amazed me, because it's like somebody took my cousin’s life, and he's not that type of person," Pipkins said.
Local perspective:
Michael Storbeck lives nearby and manages Scarlet PUmpernickel Tavern across the street from CVS.
"I feel like a lot of people down here are affected," Storbeck said. "I feel like a lot of people are scared sometimes."
He wants to see more done to make sure the people that live downtown feel safe.
"I think they need to step up or bring a new group down here to try to enforce something, kind of like they did in Deep Ellum to try and stop it before it gets worse," Storbeck said.
CVS said Egeonu was employed by a third-party security company and that they are working with Dallas police in the investigation.
What's next:
Pipkins said his cousin had dreams of becoming a Dallas police officer.
He said he plans to pursue that dream in Egeonu's honor.
Egeonu leaves behind a wife and three children.
