Volunteers fix up elderly robbery victim's home

An elderly man who has been the victim of thieves several times is getting more help.

John Mcanally made headlines a few weeks ago after the Fort Worth Police Department presented him with a $100 gift card as part of a campaign to help average citizens. Mcanally shared that he had been robbed five times over the past six months.

Volunteers from Plaza Medical Center of Fort Worth saw the story on FOX 4 News and decided to help the 86-year-old out.

“My boss texted me that night. She was pretty much in tears and she goes, ‘This guy reminds me of my dad.’ And I said it reminds me of my dad too. She said we’ve got to do something to help him and so the next day I called the Fort Worth Police Department and I pretty much got some information. I started making phone calls and then it just snowballed,” said Linda Hastings, a volunteer.

The crew is planning major work on Mcanally’s home. They plan to clean it, repaint it, rewire it and get the gas turned back on so he will have heat for the winter.

“Everybody has just come together. Our people at Plaza are just amazing. Mr. Mcanally and I have become buds. So, as long as I bring him his coffee in the morning he’s good to go,” Hastings said.

Mcanally is currently in the hospital for surgery, but said he is ready to get back home and appreciative of all the support.
