A Fort Worth man was arrested for leaving his 17-month-old son alone in an apartment that nearly caught fire.

Neighbors reported seeing smoke coming from an apartment at the Water's Landing Apartments on Fringewood Drive just before 2 a.m.

Firefighters broke down the door and found food burning on the kitchen stove. They didn't think anyone was home, then found the boy while going through the bedrooms.

Police said 34-year-old Vincent Van Arsdale admitted to leaving his son home while he drove to his wife's work.

He was arrested for abandoning/endangering a child, possession of marijuana and eight outstanding warrants.

The little boy's mother was at work at the time.

He was taken to Cook Children's Medical Center and treated for smoke inhalation.

Child Protective Services is also investigating.
