Six-alarm fire destroys South Dallas strip mall

DALLAS - A hot summer day forced Dallas-Fire Rescue to call in extra firefighters to put out the flames at a vacant building in South Dallas.

The first call to firefighters about the flames in the 2600 block of South Lancaster Road went out just after 9 a.m. Saturday. It quickly grew to six alarms.

Fire officials said a large group of firefighters was necessary so no one became overheated.

“Being that it’s hot outside, heat does play a big part of it. We want to make sure that we get those guys out, get them into rehab where they can get hydrated and get them something to eat real quick,” said Lt. Annette Ponce with Dallas-Fire Rescue.

The fire also temporarily delayed service on the DART rail lines that runs south of Interstate 30.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire but believe it may have started in the laundromat.

No one was hurt.
