Lawmaker: Body cameras would have helped in McKinney

State Sen. Royce West believes body cameras could have helped McKinney police in the investigation of Friday's incident.

He authored a bill that is awaiting Gov. Greg Abbott's signature. It allows police departments to apply for grants to help pay for body cameras.

West said in cases like the one in McKinney, video plays an important role in the investigation.

"The fact is had there not been some video footage of what happened you would have had a he said she said situation between the officer and the students," the senator said.

Police departments will have to match 25 percent of any grant they receive.
