Keller ISD to consider superintendent's resignation at next school board meeting

Keller ISD is considering a new split — this time, with its superintendent.

What we know:

According to a school board meeting agenda posted online on Monday, the Keller ISD School Board will discuss Superintendent Tracy Johnson's future with the district on Thursday.

Under ‘Actions,’ the agenda states the board will "consider and take possible action on superintendent voluntary separation agreement." After that, they will "name an interim superintendent."

Further down in the agenda, it says the board will "receive legal advice on superintendent's agreement" in executive session.

No further details were released.

What we don't know:

It's unclear if the superintendent or the school board initiated the discussions about a possible resignation. We do know that Johnson said she was ready to offer her resignation during a contentious board meeting last week while discussing a possible split of the district.

What they're saying:

Monday afternoon, Board Trustee Joni Smith said she was, once again, "blindsided" to see the topic of discussion for the next board meeting.

Smith claimed the topic was not on the agenda when she reviewed it Monday morning with Johnson.

Smith wrote on Facebook:

"I am devastated by this unexpected development and want to make it clear that I wholeheartedly support Dr. Tracy Johnson as our Superintendent. She has consistently demonstrated a commitment to doing what is right for the students and the district. Dr. Johnson is THE right leader for Keller ISD, and I firmly believe that her continued leadership is critical for our community.
In light of the turmoil our community is facing, the best path forward for Keller ISD is stability. I cannot and will not support a leadership change at this time. Our students, staff, and families deserve steady, experienced guidance, and I remain committed to advocating for what is in the best interest of our district- and that includes having Dr. Tracy Johnson as our Superintendent."

Can Keller ISD really split into 2 school districts?

Keller ISD is considering the idea of splitting the school district in two. But how would that work, and what steps are needed to make it actually happen?

The backstory:

Keller ISD is considering the possibility of splitting the district in two.

School Board President Charles Randklev has framed the idea as a "reshaping" of the district.

The idea of splitting Keller ISD would mean a traditional Keller district and a new district – Alliance ISD.

Some parents argue the new district is in a less affluent part of the current school district and would lose out.

What's next:

The Keller ISD Board of Trustees meeting will take place on Thursday beginning at 5 p.m.
