Hometown Hero: Jan Phelps

In Collin County, Jan Phelps is a friend of the Allen Public Library.  She's been a volunteer for four years in the Hallway Bookstore.

The hallway that leads to the library is filled with donated books, paperbacks, magazines and DVDs and books for adult and kids. It's a treasure hunt with prices from 25¢ to $3. The money from the sales supports the speakers and artists the Allen Public Library brings in for its free programs throughout the year.

Jan is delighted to help her community after retiring from Texas Instruments. She's the daughter of a librarian, so she says books are in her blood.

If you'd like to donate books, you can leave them at the checkout counter in the library. If you want to shop in the hallway bookstore, use the honor system and leave your money in the black metal canister.

The Allen Public Library is celebrating its 50th anniversary this Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m. into the night. For a list of the festivities, go to www.allenlibrary.org.
