Garland police are asking for the public’s help finding the driver of a white work truck accused of hitting a 12-year-old who was crossing North Garland Avenue on an electric scooter Saturday morning.

Garland crosswalk crash

What we know:

Police said the boy was crossing at Apollo Road around 8:30 a.m. A witness told investigators the 12-year-old waited for the crosswalk signal before he started crossing.

"He did everything right," Garland police spokesperson Matt Pesta said. "He waited for the crosswalk to turn green, and then he proceeded to cross the street."

Police said a white utility-style work truck had stopped before turning south onto North Garland Avenue. Investigators believe the driver was watching traffic but did not check the crosswalk and did not see the boy in front of him.

The truck hit the boy, police said. The driver stopped briefly, then left the scene.

12-year-old in stable condition

Dig deeper:

The 12-year-old was taken to the hospital. Police said he is stable but suffered significant injuries.

Police described the vehicle as a white, four-door utility-style work truck with storage compartments along the sides of the bed. The driver may be a heavyset man with a short buzz cut.

Investigators do not have a photo of the truck and have not identified a specific make or model.

"We’re asking that driver now to do the right thing, talk to us," Pesta said. "We want to talk to you. We want to hear your version of the event, what took place that day, so we can complete this investigation."

What you can do:

Police are also asking anyone with dash camera footage from the area to contact them.

Pesta urged drivers to take an extra moment to look both ways for people using sidewalks and crosswalks as transportation.

Anyone with information is asked to call Garland police at 972-485-4840.
