Fort Worth leaders vote on Stockyards preservation plan
FORT WORTH, Texas - The Fort Worth city council voted late Tuesday night in favor of a 60-acre historical district for the Stockyards.
Developers are getting ready to start a major $175 million renovation project in the area. They want to build apartments, shops, restaurants, hotels and more. The historic preservation law will protect the look of the Stockyards. Developers would be required to follow strict guidelines.
The zoning committee and many historic preservationists had pushed for a larger 139-acre district, saying it would provide more protection.
"I like the wider area, because the Stockyards are growing and business is growing," said Stockyards business owner Judy Henson. "We have people from all over the world coming more and more, and sometimes Tuesday's look like our Fridays used to look like."
The council voted 8 to 1 on the measure.
