Foreign GISD teachers upset with visa program
A pending federal investigation into Garland ISD’s program to recruit teachers from other countries has forced a dozen or so teachers to leave the country.
FOX 4 spoke to a former teacher who says he has a couple of weeks to move his family back to Colombia.
Former Garland ISD teacher Bernardo Montes was part of the H-1B visa program.
The program has been under investigation for corruption since last year.
Montes says his family, including his American-born daughter, must go back to Colombia Nov. 14th.
"I'm really angry about it,” said Montes. “For some teachers, they handled the cases correctly, but in my case and some other cases, we noticed there were silly mistakes…whenever immigration saw those mistakes, they denied the cases.”
There were roughly 200 teachers from other countries in the district's program.
