Firefighters from across the country gathered in Lewisville Friday to help raise money for a fellow firefighter whose son was seriously injured in a boating accident.
Nearly $35,000 has been raised for Aiden McKitrick who fell off a boat deck and hit by the propeller last week in Lake Ray Hubbard.
"In this particular case, it's just kind of a perfect storm as far as the tragedy and how deeply it's felt,” said Lewisville Fire Department Chief Terry McGrath.
"It's pretty shocking, especially with it being a kid,” said Lewisville firefighter Casey Selby. “That's always harder for everybody. Everybody can relate."
The 3-year-old lost part of his leg in the accident and has internal injuries, according to a GoFundMe page set up for the family. They remain at the hospital surrounded by firefighters praying.
“Within a span of about 12 hours, they got about $6,000 worth of musical instruments and donated some pipes and the bass drum, snare drum and tenor drum,” said McGrath. “So we raffled those off to our attendees. We raised about $7,000."
Lt. Michael Kick from Buffalo, New York donated a drum for the raffle.
"And we're able to help out somebody that is in need and raise some money for the family, for Aiden,” Kick said. “I think it's great we're able to do that, support each other."
