Disaster recovery center in Garland to close next week
Tornado victims have until the end of next week left to grab what they need from a disaster recovery center in Garland.
Volunteers at the site said there are plenty of items to choose from and what's left will be moved to another site and that's what they’re hoping to avoid.
Dallas County, Garland and Rowlett have operated the center since the tornadoes struck on Dec. 26. The location at the Granger Recreation Center has been a place for victims to get needed supplies and volunteers to register and help out.
Monique Monroe heads up the volunteer operation and said an average of 60 to 80 people have come through the doors daily, but now the need has drastically dropped.
“Once the need dies down we usually look for organizations who will continue this over the long-term to assist our survivors,” Monroe said. “It's not going to go to waste."
Tornado victims like Marian Balthazar are grateful for the help. Balthazar had just returned home from church that Saturday when a tornado tore through her street.
“This widow went boom, boom like that. We looked back and it shattered,” Balthazar said.
Balthazar has made use of the recovery center and said she and other victims have appreciated the help.
Officials said the leftover supplies will be donated to charities with the condition that they be given to tornado victims
