Dashcam video released in officer-involved shooting of UNT student

Officials released video on Wednesday of a deadly officer-involved shooting that took place near the University of North Texas over the weekend.

Ryan McMillan of Fort Worth, a UNT student, was shot and killed early Sunday morning during a confrontation with police, according to UNT police.

UNT Police Cpl. Stephen Bean responded to a report of a student smashing car windows with an ax.

Bean eventually shot and killed McMillan, who had just turned 21.

DPS released 47 seconds of unedited dashcam video from three different camera angles.

The rest of the video, the entire length of the aftermath, was not released because DPS says it's still considered evidence.         

The dashcam video shows the officer pulling up to the scene to confront McMillan, who was standing on the corner.

In the video, McMillan can be heard saying what sounds like "Shoot me!" several times.

The two move out of view of the front-facing dashcam, but additional camera angles on the patrol car capture what happened next.

It shows McMillan stepping forward as Bean steps back, repeatedly saying, “Back away!” Bean shouts it a sixth time, and then three gunshots are heard.

Immediately after, Bean is heard saying, “I've got a white man down with a hatchet in his hand, Fry and Oak,” and he communicates with dispatch.

The university says the officer is on administrative leave during the investigation.

It may take two months for blood tests to come back that will show if McMillan had anything in his system.

A friend of McMillan’s told FOX 4 over the phone that none of this makes sense to those who loved McMillan, and describes him as someone who was not aggressive.
