Dallas resident in Honolulu braces for Hurricane Lane to arrive
Hurricane Lane is now hitting Hawaii's big island and is bringing strong winds and heavy rain. The good news is the storm has been downgraded to a category two.
While it's still unclear whether Hurricane Lane will make a direct hit, the storm continues to unleash torrential rains on parts of Hawaii.
A Dallas man who lives in Honolulu part time says the conditions on Friday continue to deteriorate.
Hurricane Lane may be decreasing in strength but not in danger as it continues a slow trek toward Hawaii's island system.
Torrential rain is falling on Hawaii's big island, triggering massive flooding in many areas and trapping many residents in their homes.
On the island of Maui, high winds from the hurricane are fueling a brushfire that shutdown several roads and forced evacuations.
In Honolulu, officials have activated the island-wide outdoor siren warning system as the powerful hurricane closes in. An emergency alert system is also telling the public about the potential of severe flooding and damaging winds.
“Right now, I have no fear,” he said. But when the rain starts coming and the wind starts coming, that's when I'll get a little worried.”
Slusser's condo is under renovation so he's riding the storm out at hotel, along with hundreds of stranded tourists. The hotel has a generator. He hopes they won't need to use it.
“A lot of locals are taking this very serious, and have been taking all of the supplies from Costco and Sam’s. There wasn't any water the other day when I went,” Slusser said. “When the rain starts coming — which they say should be in about 8 hours — I'll be inside watching the news. Watching the weather channel.”
Slusser says people in Honolulu are getting stir crazy waiting for the hurricane to arrive. So for now, many people are outside walking along the beach and waiting to see what Hurricane Lane will do.
