Dallas ISD accepting applications for 'choice' schools

Dallas ISD parents now have four new schools they can choose for their kids to attend and the district will provide the transportation.

Dallas ISD is accepting applications for the so-called transformation schools. They’re like magnet schools, but they are open to all students regardless of academic ability.

The transformation schools range from pre-k to high school. This is the first year for ‘Idea’ High School at Fannin, which is close to downtown Dallas.

"Once you opt in, and make a choice, this is my school, you study harder you care more, and you put forth the effort," said Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings.

DISD's goal is to launch 35 choice schools by 2020

This school year there were twice as many applications for ‘Idea’ High School as there were spaces. If a school fills up, students will be chosen through a computer lottery system.

“Parents vote with their feet anyway, so we need to give them something great to vote for," said Dallas ISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa.
