Dallas church helps homeless escape bitter cold

For the first time ever, Oak Lawn United Methodist Church is serving as a temporary homeless shelter.

It was a member of the congregation, who is herself homeless, who suggested the idea Sunday morning. Church leaders quickly put a plan into action.

About 30 people spent the night at the church in the church’s hospitality center. Others slept in the sanctuary itself.

Members of the congregation are helping with staffing and cooking. One volunteer told Fox 4 it felt good to lend a hand.

The plan is to open the church again Monday night, and again Tuesday night, and possibly Wednesday.
