Police in The Colony shot and killed a man with a knife while responding to a burglary call.

The shooting happened around 6 p.m. Tuesday after a woman called police to say someone had broken into her home in the 5500 block of Rice Street.

The woman and her daughter were inside the house when it happened. She said the suspect used cinderblocks to smash through their door. She grabbed a knife off their kitchen counter and her daughter ran to a neighbor’s house for help.

The Colony Police Department said responding officers found a suspect inside the home. He allegedly grabbed a knife.

“Officers, fearing for their lives, drew their service weapons and fired at the suspect,” the department said in a press release.

The suspect who was shot died at the scene. He was identified as 24-year-old Shaquille Rogers.

Rogers’ family lives not far from where the incident happened. His father told FOX 4’s Shannon Murray they are grieving.

Rogers’ father does not believe his son intended to burglarize the home and instead may have been on drugs and not in his right mind.

There’s still some confusion about a possible second suspect. Officers at the scene believed they saw someone run down an alley and police said they were looking for that person. But they could never provide a description.

The woman who lives in the home said she only saw one person in her house. She does not believe there was ever a second suspect.

A spokesman for the department said Wednesday morning he had no further information. He could not clarify whether or not police are still looking for a second suspect.

The Texas Rangers are now leading the investigation.
