Same-sex penguin couple welcomes baby chick
A same-sex penguin coupled welcomed their foster chick into the world at the Sea Life Sydney Aquarium.
The two dads are named Sphen and Magic. Keepers said they became inseparable at the aquarium. They were nicknamed Sphengic.
After they built their own pebble nest together during the breeding season, the aquarium’s staff decided to give them a dummy egg to care for. They reportedly took turns sitting on it.
They did so well the keepers replaced the fake egg with a real one and it hatched. The proud fathers are now taking turns caring for their baby chick.
The tiny penguin will stay with its dad for the first five weeks of his life.
It’s the first sub-Antarctic penguin to be born at the Sydney Aquarium.
