Rockwall County Judge David Sweet arrested for DWI

A judge in Rockwall County was arrested overnight for allegedly driving while intoxicated.

Police said an officer pulled Judge David Sweet over around 12:30 a.m. Friday in the 2900 block of Ridge Road in Rockwall. Sweet had just left a restuarant.

The officer suspected Sweet was intoxicated and gave him a field sobriety test, which he failed, police said.

Sweet refused a breathalyzer test and was booked into the Rockwall County jail on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was charged with a Class B misdemeanor.

"It was a first time offense for Mr. Sweet, a misdemeanor arrest and our procedure is that we offer a blood or breath test and if they decline then we move forward from there," said Sgt. Jeff Welch, Rockwall police.

With no breathalyzer results or blood alcohol content, the only evidence against the judge will be the officer’s video tape of the field sobriety test and his testimony.

Sweet, 42, has served as a judge in Rockwall County since in 2015. He has also served as the mayor and a councilman in Rockwall.
