Red Cross asking for emergency blood donations

The American Red Cross has an urgent need for blood donations.

The Red Cross says blood donations have fallen short of hospitals' needs in the summer months. There’s currently less than a five-day supply for hospitals in North Texas and 39,000 fewer donations than needed nationally.

A spokesman says 20 percent of the organization's blood supply comes from college students and high schoolers, so supply has been low because of summer vacations.
