A five-year-old boy is in the hospital, but alive, after he was trapped in a burning home.

Plano police officers Russell Harris and Mark Jones were in the area when the call came in, and arrived before firefighters. They grabbed an aluminum ladder and used it to reach the boy.

The boy's mother couldn't get upstairs to save her son and ran outside. Fire officials say the fire started directly below the second floor bedroom where the boy was trapped.

Fire crews began arriving around the time police finished rescuing the boy. He and his mother are in separate hospitals. She is being treated for burns but expected to be fine. The boy is being treated for smoke inhalation.
