'Moms of Murphy' use Facebook to help catch suspected package thief

Some observant  moms used social media to help catch a suspected thief in Collin County.

Around 3:30 Wednesday afternoon, Murphy police say, a man stole a package from Tammy Leflett's porch containing her son's expensive Nikes.
Neighbor Andrea John's surveillance camera got a picture of him, which she posted to with a description of what happened to the "Moms of Murphy" Facebook page.

Less than an hour later, police say the suspect was involved in a minor crash near Plano East High School.

A Murphy mom named Maggie, who asked us not to use her last name, says she drove by the crash. She put two-and-two together a few minutes later, when she logged onto the page.

"I thought if there's a small chance that's the same car and that's him yeah I'm going to go after him," said Maggie.

She showed the post to an officer at the scene, who looked in the car and found packages belonging to at least eight victims in Plano, Murphy and Wylie. Police also found Tammy's son's missing shoes. The total value of the stolen goods was around $750.

The driver's car was impounded and Murphy investigators are building their case against him.

"Hopefully justice will come to him," said Andrea.

The Murphy police chief presented certificates of appreciation to the moms.
