Lawmakers delay debate on immigrant tuition

State lawmakers have pushed back debate on the repeal of a law that grants in-state tuition to illegal immigrants at public universities.

A Senate subcommittee will hear testimony April 7 on the 2001 law that received Governor Rick Perry's signature. Conservative lawmakers argue it encourages people to come to the U.S. illegally and is not fair to U.S. citizens from other states who pay out of state tuition.

Proponents say students should not be punished for the decisions made by their parents.
