Ice forms as firefighters battle South Dallas fire

Water used to fight an early morning fire in South Dallas turned to ice and caused problems for firefighters.

The fire started just after 2:30 a.m. in a warehouse building in the 3800 block of Elsie Faye Higgins Street, which is south of Highway 352. No one was there the time because the building was under renovation.

Firefighters arrived quickly but weren’t able to go inside because the flames were too intense. And the water they sprayed on top of the building quickly froze because of the temperatures in the 20s.

It took firefighters about an hour to knock down the flames. They are still watching some hot spots and dealing with runoff water that turned to ice.

It will be a while before the cause of the fire can be investigated.
