Hometown Heroes: Fred Shapiro

This coming spring will mark the seventh year for the SBB Golf Classic at the Lantana Golf Club in Denton County.

Golfers love the outing, but what they love even more is raising money to fight childhood cancers.

The SBB Golf Classic supports the Children's Cancer Fund, which funds research at Children's Health and UT Southwestern Medical Center.

The event’s catwalk at the Hilton Anatole Hotel is filled each April with cancer patients, and those who are cured who get to strut their stuff with celebrity friends, like Hall of Fame Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman.

This year, 500 North Texas children will be diagnosed with cancer.

Fred Shapiro started the tournament to raise money for the Children's Cancer Fund.

His daughter, Melinda, was diagnosed with a brain tumor when she was 6 years old.

Melinda is 36 and despite living with a lot of complications, she always has a smile on her face. That's that Fred wants for all kids in this battle.

This year’s event will take place Friday, April 22.
