Hometown Hero: Pat Murphree

For 15 years, Pat Murphree has been a volunteer at the Dallas VA Hospital. She's there at least two days a week for a seven-hour shift each time.

Pat is one of four "Pink Ladies" who volunteer in pink jackets.  When I covered her story, she was decked out in pink bling for Valentine's Day.  She's the past state president of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary, the wife of a Marine veteran and a great-grandmother.

Pat volunteers in the Dialysis Clinic, and she makes it her mission to cheer up the patients, men and women she calls "my veterans.” The military is in her DNA, and she has a deep respect for the patients who once wore the military uniform.

The week of Valentine's is also National Salute to Veteran Patients Week at VA Hospitals and Centers. If you'd like information about being a volunteer, call the VA hospital’s voluntary service at (214) 857-0428.
