Hometown Hero: Breast Cancer Tea

In 1998, Rhonda Burns had a friend with four family members who were fighting cancer. Rhonda organized a tea in a home in Hurst to support them, raise awareness and raise money. About 14 people attended.

20 years later, the Breast Cancer Tea is held in a hotel with hundreds of guests buying tickets to the festive luncheon that gives money to the American Cancer Society to buy wigs for cancer patients.

Burns estimates that in 20 years, her all-volunteer organization has given $100,000 to the American Cancer Society for its wig program.

Last year in North Texas, ACS gave 1,500 free wigs to women and men fighting all kinds of cancer. The patients get one free wig a year while they're in treatment and those wigs are expensive and not always covered by insurance.

This year, the 20th annual Breast Cancer Tea will be held on Saturday, August 25, at the DFW Airport Marriott Hotel. You can buy tickets online at www.BreastCancerTea.org. You're encouraged to wear a fabulous, fun hat.

For cancer patients needing a free wig call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 or log on to www.cancer.org.
