FWPD releases video of Jan. 9 officer-involved shooting | FULL NEWS CONFERENCE
The Fort Worth Police Department gave an update and shared body camera video from several officers involved in a shooting at a home on Jan. 9, 2025. The suspect, 31-year-old Cameron Leverett, allegedly fired shots at officers when he came outside the house.
FORT WORTH, Texas - Fort Worth police released video of an officer-involved shooting that happened last week. It’s just one of three police shootings that have happened in the city so far this year.
Sgt. Leah Waggoner said the department is releasing video and details of the case in an effort to be transparent.
"I know that we’ve had multiple incidents happen over the last couple of weeks. It’s been a very tough time for all of us. And we know that the community wants answers, and that’s what we intend to do," she said.
Jan. 9 FWPD officer-involved shooting
The backstory:
This shooting happened last Thursday as many people in North Texas were dealing with the snow and ice.
Sgt. Wagoner said officers were called to a home on Seafield Lane around 6:30 p.m. because of a domestic disturbance.
A woman reported that her boyfriend, later identified as 31-year-old Cameron Leverett, was drunk and had fired several shots outside the home. She had gone to a neighbor’s house to call 911.
When the officers got there, Sgt. Wagner said they surrounded the home and tried to call for Leverett to come out. During that time, they heard gunshots coming from inside the house.
"Leverett exited the home and began to fire his weapon at officers," she said.
Three officers returned fire, hitting Leverett.
He was taken to the hospital and remains in critical condition.
No officers were hurt.
What's next:
If Leverett recovers, he will be booked into the Tarrant County jail on seven counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public servant and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon involving family violence.
Police said they do have a history with him and had responded to his home a week earlier.
The three officers who fired shots at him were placed on routine administrative leave for an internal investigation.
They have since returned to regular duty.
Bodycam video released
The newly released video starts with the 911 call from Leverett’s girlfriend. She can later be seen on camera talking to officers and answering their questions about the type of guns in the house.
While they were talking to her, the officers heard several gunshots coming from inside the house.
Video from three different angles shows officers ordering Leverett to come out of the house and show his hands. There is an exchange of gunfire when he comes outside.
The video doesn’t clearly show Leverett pointing his weapon at the police, but it does show the handgun in the snow afterward.
3 officer-involved shootings in 1 week
Big picture view:
Fort Worth police officers have been involved in three shootings so far this year.
In addition to the Jan. 9 incident, officers killed a man who charged at them with knives early Wednesday morning.
They also fired shots at a man who was threatening people outside an apartment leasing office later that day. He was not hit and was later arrested.
"Within about a week’s time, we’ve had multiple incidents where officers faced potentially deadly threats, people armed with either knives or guns. Multiple times officers were being shot at," said Chief Neil Noakes. "Nobody wants to start 2025 like that. But I hope it is a reminder to all of us about the inherent dangers of this job and the fact that officers never know what they’re going to face on any call."

What they're saying:
Chief Noakes said he’s proud of the way his officers handled this incident. He said they were courageous and compassionate at the same time.
"They tried to communicate with this gentleman, even saying ‘We want to get you help.’ They heard rounds coming from the house multiple times while they were there," he said. "But at some point they were faced with a deadly threat when the gentleman exited the residence and fired at my officers. At that point they did what they are trained to do and what I expect them to do. They protected themselves and everyone else in all the homes in this neighborhood."
The chief said he hopes 2025 slows down, though.
He’s doesn't want his officers facing deadly threats on such a routine basis.
