Flower Mound man who crashed into women on bench turns himself in

FLOWER MOUND, Texas - A Flower Mound man behind the wheel of a car that nearly crushed two women on a bench turned himself into police on Wednesday.

Police say Richard Gledhill, 46, is charged with failing to stop and provide information after an injury accident.

Surveillance video from the Oct. 15 crash shows the women, Carla Howell and Diane Spinuzzi, barely making it out of the way as Gledhill’s car jumps the curb at Gloria’s Restaurant in Flower Mound. The women were treated at the hospital but not seriously hurt.

Gledhill surrendered with his attorney Wednesday morning. A police document reveals the mystery began to unravel when tipsters identified him as the man in the video.

"He's cooperating so far as he did provide us with a statement and access to his vehicle,” explained Flower Mound Police Captain Wess Griffin.

The probable cause affidavit states a restaurant manager made the initial contact with Gledhill after the crash when he ran up to his window. He told investigators “the driver appeared to be passed out and had an aerosol can between his legs... He eventually responded and exited the vehicle."

Howell and Spinuzzi are continuing to make strides toward a full recovery.

Police say it would be difficult to prove Gledhill had drugs or alcohol in his system, but there are other aspects investigators will look into to try and explain what caused the frightening scene.

"That’s one of the things we do in an investigation of this type, any type of assaultive offense. We'll go back and try to retrace the suspect’s steps leading up to the event itself,” Griffin said.

Gledhill's attorney said he will undergo medical and psychological evaluations with the goal to explain what caused him to lose control of his car but declined an on-camera interview.
