Elections 2016 preview: Dwaine Caraway vs John Wiley Price

Former Dallas councilmember Dwaine Caraway is hoping to knock off longtime Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price in one of the most-watched local primary races in 2016.

Both candidates have a strong ground game in District 1 and are working to be visible with yard signs, online videos and even a commercial for TV.

When asked to compare the two, Price said it’s “governance versus gimmicks.” Caraway said people know what’s going on and “they know rhetoric versus results and they know what the real gimmick is and it ain’t me.”

Caraway said Price hasn’t done anything for South Dallas and it’s time for change.

“You have your own little secret agenda and your own little clique and I’m glad that I wasn’t a part of their click,” Caraway said. “You can’t get it done for the people.”

The looming issue over the race is Price’s pending trial and federal indictment for public corruption.

Price believes the upcoming trial won’t affect the race.

“I’ve got lawyers, I’m not worried about that and I don’t think my constituents are worried about that,” Price said. “This has been going on the last five or six years we stay focused.”

Price said his years of service for the people in his district is the difference in the election.

“I’m there man and I’ve always been there man,” Price said. “People reach out to people that they think will try to provide assistance and that’s what we're supposed to do we're supposed to do that and nobody does it better.”

Early voting starts on Feb. 16 and ends Feb. 26. Election Day is March 1.
