'Don't tip immigrants': Couple leaves hate-filled note on receipt
BORDENTOWN, N.J. (FOX 29) - "Don't tip immigrants."
That was the hate-filled message a Spanish-speaking server received on the back of her receipt at a Burlington County restaurant.
On Thursday night, a couple dined at Under the Moon Cafe in Bordentown, New Jersey, and reportedly raved about the food, decor and service, according to owner Santiago Orosco.
"Upon arrival they seemed very excited about dining at Under the Moon, complementing the ambiance, as well as all the recommendations that our server had made," Orosco wrote in a Facebook post.
It wasn't until the server, Lorena Bossi, was closing out for the evening and reconciling sales receipts that she noticed the note on the back of the couple's bill.
"I can only assume that they heard our American multi-lingual server speak Spanish to another employee," Orosco wrote. "I am utterly shocked at this blatant ignorance."
Messages of support for the cafe, Bossi and Orosco have since flooded in.
"My boss and i are overwhelmed with all of the people wanting to send me tips," Bossi wrote in a Facebook post.
Bossi originally posted about the incident, which went viral on social media.
"[It] was never about the tip," she clarified. "I didn’t post this to get anything out of it other than awareness. I was deeply saddened by the whole situation and hope this will shed some light on the racism we deal with in this country on a daily basis."
Now, instead of accepting tips, Bossi urges those who wish to send the restaurant money to donate money in her name to charity.
Bossi plans to discuss which charity with her boss and make a future announcement.
"Let’s make a negative thing into something positive!" she wrote.
