Dallas dance instructor arrested on indecent exposure charges after standoff

A dance instructor in West Dallas was arrested for two counts of indecent exposure to a child after a brief standoff Tuesday.

Dallas police showed up at 12:30 p.m. with a warrant for Vann Gilbert’s arrest, but he refused to come out until swat team negotiators talked with him.

Police arrested Gilbert, where neighbors said he held his dance classes on Castle Street. Police had been investigating Gilbert since August after a man came forward to say Gilbert had sexually abused him when he was 14-years-old.

The alleged victim had been enrolled in the Mahogany Dance Theatre of Texas in 1997.

Gilbert’s website said the dance company was a non-profit he began in 1978. The website claimed he had provided an oasis for hundreds of at risk children in distressed environments.

People who work across the street say they would see 20-30 children coming to a dance class on the weekends. A man who came out of the dance studio on Tuesday declined to answer questions.

Gilbert has been jailed on $100,000 bond for two counts of indent exposure to a child. Dallas police want anyone who has additional information or knows other victims to contact them.
