America 250: National Parks offering free admission for 4th of July weekend

You can celebrate America's 250th anniversary and visit a National Park for free this weekend.

All National Park Service sites that charge an entrance fee will offer free admission to US citizens and permanent residents. Nonresidents must pay entrance and any nonresident fees unless they have the Non-Resident Annual Pass.

In addition to free admission over the 4th of July weekend, there are three upcoming days when entrance fees are waived.

  • September 17: Constitution Day
  • October 27: Theodore Roosevelt's birthday
  • November 11: Veterans Day

The National Park System

The National Park System includes 433 areas covering more than 85 million acres in every U.S. state, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

The National Park Service was created by an act signed by President Woodrow Wilson on August 25, 1916. Yellowstone National Park was established by an act signed by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872, as the nation's first national park.
