7 students injured after Northwest ISD school bus crashes

JUSTIN, Texas - Seven children are recovering after their school bus rolled over in Denton County Tuesday afternoon. Everyone hurt suffered just minor injuries.

The students from Northwest ISD’s Justin Elementary School were headed home when DPS troopers say the bus' right tires went off the road, and the driver overcorrected. That move sent the bus rolling before coming to rest on its side along FM 407 around 3:15 p.m.

The school bus was carrying 18 Northwest ISD students when the crash happened.

“The bus was headed on its normal route from Justin Elementary school as soon as school let out,” said Northwest ISD Spokesperson Emily Conklin.

Texas DPS is handling the investigation. They say the right side wheels went off the road when the driver overcorrected and rolled the bus. Troopers haven't said why it happened.

Nearby drivers and eventually first responders jumped into action. Ultimately, paramedics took seven kids to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

“I’m being told those are non-life threatening injuries,” Conklin said. “So we are lucky that that is the case today.”

The students who weren't transported boarded another bus back to Justin Elementary to reunite with parents.

“I was worried it was their bus at first when I heard about it,” said Sara Hale, a mother of Justin Elementary School student. “They're my preciouses.”

Hale went to the school to pick up her kids, who were on a bus that was behind the one that crashed. They were diverted back to the school, too. She had no clue what was going on at first. She only knew that her boys hadn't shown up at their bus stop.

“You never know what's going to happen to your kids,” she said. “They're supposed to be home at a certain time. They're home at that time every day. And when they're not home for an hour, you get scared.”

Witnesses helped right after the crash happened. They also helped the kids start contacting their parents to let them know what happened.

DPS officials have not said whether the bus driver will face any charges. She was not injured in the crash.
