5 second rule: Test the pavement for your pet's paws

If you're wondering if it's too hot on the pavement for your pet's paws, here's a simple trick to remember.

The five-second rule: Place the back of your hand on the pavement. If you cannot hold it there for five seconds, it's too hot to walk your dog on the pavement.

"If the asphalt is so hot you could probably fry an egg on it, then it can burn your dog’s feet. Also keep in consideration certain dog’s pads, especially puppies are not as adaptable to heat and may not be able to stand even temperatures you can," said the SPCA Florida.

So don't wait for your poor pup to do the "hot potato" dance, take just five seconds to check out that pavement before your walk.
