Martellus Bennett publishes new book 'Dear Black Boy' to inspire youth

DALLAS - Former Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett is on a mission to inspire the younger generation through literature.

“Dear Black Boy” is an illustrated book adapted from an inspirational letter Bennett wrote to black children.

His goal is to get kids to dream bigger, using sports tropes to remind them that there is more to life than athletics.

“For me where I’m from, the low-hanging fruit is the sport. They roll you a ball and say good luck. Everything else is higher up on the tree for us. That’s when I’m like you got to climb the tree and you’ll receive. The fruit at the top is sweeter than Kool-Aid. The low hanging fruit has been grabbed and grabbed. That’s what they expect you to get. Not too many people are encouraging the kids to climb the tree to get the top fruit which is their highest expectation,” he said.

Bennett will speak at two events Thursday night. He’ll be at the Half-Priced Books store on Northwest Highway at 5 p.m. and then appears at Wild Detectives Bookstore in Oak Cliff at 7:30 p.m.
