Healthy Substitutes for Burgers

Dietitian Alicia Jerome from Market Street stops by Good Day to talk about ways you can make some unhealthy foods healthier. For example, she adds mushrooms to ground meats to reduce the calories, increase the volume and add flavor and moisture.

Mushroom Bleu Cheese Burgers

1 lb 93% lean ground beef
8 ounces fresh mushroom, finely chopped
½ onion, finely chopped
2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce (or tamari)
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
¼ cup crumbled blue cheese

Mix all burger ingredients together in mixing bowl (except blue-cheese). Form patties, cover and place in refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Grill on high direct heat for 6-8 minutes, turning once.

Sprinkle blue-cheese or other cheese of choice while still on the grill.

Assemble burger to your liking, eat and enjoy.
