Waco La Vega tops Argyle 33-31 in 4A-DI for 1st state title

HOUSTON (AP) — Jamal Williams scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 11 seconds remaining to propel Waco La Vega to its first state title with a 33-31 victory against Argyle in the Class 4A Division I championship game Friday.

Williams' touchdown capped a 53-yard drive to the fifth touchdown and fifth lead change in the fourth quarter. The winning march was aided by a pair of penalties for 12 men on the field by the Argyle defense.

After the go-ahead score, the PAT was blocked and nearly returned for what would have been a tying 2-point play by Argyle's Dylan Sadler, who was tackled before he could reach the end zone.

Argyle had gone in front 31-27 on Dane Ledford's 68-yard touchdown pass to Gage McCook with 2:09 remaining.

Kemoche Hobbs had 136 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries for La Vega (16-0), which was playing in its third title game.

Ledford had 144 yards passing and two touchdowns and ran for another score for Arygle (15-1), which was seeking a second title in a third straight trip to the finals.

The back-and-forth final quarter started with a 25-yard scoring run by Hobbs to put La Vega in front 20-17. Argyle went back in front 3 minutes later on Ledford's 4-yard pass to J.C. Chalk.

La Vega answered on John Richards' 3-yard run before Ledford's long scoring connection to McCook, who had five catches for 100 yards.

Williams threw for 165 yards with two interceptions, and Benson Brandon had eight catches for 109 yards.

Argyle's first 17 points were set up by La Vega turnovers, starting with a fumble on a kickoff that Chase Estrada recovered at the La Vega 10. Ledford scored on a 6-yard run.

Shane McKinney forced and recovered a fumble on the opening drive of the third quarter, setting up Caleb Holt's 42-yard field goal.

Then Gage Campbell intercepted a pass and returned it 28 yards to the La Vega 4. McCook scored from the 2 for Argyle's first lead.
