UIL announces high school district alignment changes
DALLAS - The school of hard knocks builds tough high school football programs and with Thursday’s bi-annual UIL realignments some will have to go great lengths for a win.
Powerhouse Euless Trinity High School will put in some miles for district games -- San Angelo, for one, is a 500-mile roundtrip.
"Typically we're grouped with school within 15 to 20 minutes of us,” said MIKE FIELDER, Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD athletic director.
Gas up the bus and go was the no pain, no gain reaction of some schools.
"Travel has never been a concern to us out here,” said Brent McCallie, San Angelo ISD Athletic Director. “We don't like to travel too far, but again, travel is not that big of a deal."
San Angelo is no stranger to North Texas, having played several games here in recent years.
“We played multiple games with Byron Nelson we played 2 or 3 times, in the playoffs last fall we were in Mansfield,” McCallie said.
Districts have learned to expect anything with a UIL realignment. For the next two years, schools in Mesquite paired up with Longview. Granbury basketball was put in the same district as teams in Wichita Falls.
But for most, a good locker room pep talk is how to make the best of it and go for the win.
"It'll be fun, new competition, new teams, new experience,” Fielder said.
The University Interscholastic League realigns districts every two years to adjust for population changes. Cities grow, new schools open and that all affects which teams will be in which districts.
Some longtime rivals were disrupted, but new ones could be formed. The changes also mean some schools could have much tougher schedules and others could get easier.
Prosper High School, for example, is one of the fastest growing schools in the state. It moved up to the largest classification -- Class 6A from its current 5A. It was moved into the same district as Allen High School, the defending Class 6A Division I football state champions, along with schools from Plano and McKinney.
