Dallas Mavs Harrison Barnes gives back to the Boys and Girls Club

A Dallas Mavericks star took his giving spirit up a notch to make Christmas special and easy for several East Oak Cliff families.

Children who are part of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dallas had big smiles thanks to Dallas Mavericks forward Harrison Barnes. He brought them a Christmas surprise that many of the kids and their parents will never forget.

For the Boys and Girls Club in East Oak Cliff, Santa was a 6-foot-8 NBA champion. Barnes and his wife bought toys for every child: bicycles, remote control cars, dolls and signed basketballs.

"I got me a basketball with his signature,” 12-year-old Simon proudly said. “So now when I go to the court, I'm going to be winning all the time."

On top of that, several families received gift cards to help pay for Christmas.

But the bigger gift was a $50,000 refurbished basketball court the kids will be playing on.

Barnes has a special place in his heart for the organization since he grew up playing basketball after school at Boys and Girls Club.

"You had to do your homework before you got on the court. So I understood that balance early on, and it was a great way for me to get better as a kid,” Barnes said. “To be able to provide a court now that I'm in the NBA to kids that I know will appreciate it, that means everything."

"How much pride will the kids have saying Harrison Barnes gave us this court and we get to play on what the NBA players have,” said Cherri Rowe with the Boys and Girls Club. “So it's going to be really awesome for them."

It's left an impression on kids like David Green, who knows he's valued by one of Dallas' best athletes.

"It's better to give than receive,” David said. “He taught me how to give to others and never think about yourself all the time."

"Hopefully, this is the first step in a lot of different things I want to do just giving back to Dallas, South Dallas specifically, and the Oak Cliff area — just giving back to these kids,” Barnes said.

It wasn’t a one-time gift to the club for Barnes. He gives them tickets to Mavs games throughout the year.
