Dallas Cowboys hire Matt Eberflus as defensive coordinator

FRISCO, Texas - One day after introducing new head coach Brian Schottenheimer, the Dallas Cowboys officially announced the hire of former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus as their new defensive coordinator on Tuesday.

Eberflus isn't a stranger to Dallas. He was a defensive assistant under Rod Marinelli on Jason Garrett’s staff from 2011-2017.
He left the Cowboys to take a defensive coordinator job with the Indianapolis Colts in 2018. He stayed there until he was hired to be the Bears' head coach in 2022.
Eberflus had a 14-32 record as a head coach.
The Bears fired Eberflus on Nov. 29, following a 23-20 loss to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day.
With the Bears and Colts, Eberflus' defenses were ranked in the top half for five of his seven seasons. They were in the top 10 in takeaways in six of the seven seasons.

The Cowboys' offensive coordinator position is still open.
Dallas reportedly requested an interview with Falcons tight ends coach Kevin Koger.

No other candidates have been named publicly.
During Schottenheimer's news conference on Monday, the Cowboys said that the plan is for the new head coach to call plays.

Schottenheimer did not call plays in his two seasons as offensive coordinator in Dallas.
