Couple claims winning $473M Powerball ticket sold in Arizona, lottery officials say

A Gilbert couple in Arizona claimed millions after they purchased the winning $473 million ticket to the Powerball drawing on April 27.

According to Arizona Lottery officials, the ticket was sold at a QuikTrip gas station near Gilbert and Warner Roads on April 26.

The winning numbers for the Powerball drawing are 11, 36, 61, 62, 68 and the power ball is 4. The Power Play is 2. The jackpot is $473.1 million, the largest jackpot won on a single ticket in Arizona history.

"A married couple from Gilbert came forward on Friday, April 29 to claim the $473.1 million Powerball jackpot that was drawn on Wednesday, April 27, 2022. The couple chose a cash payment for a lump sum of $283.3 million. The couple also claimed permanent anonymity," Arizona Lottery said in a statement.

The QuikTrip that sold the ticket will be getting a $50,000 bonus from the Arizona Lottery.

Gregg Edgar, Arizona Lottery executive director, congratulated the couple, saying, "The Arizona Lottery is all about making dreams come true and doing good in our community. As the Powerball rolled over the past few weeks, we saw many winners from all over the state. We are thrilled for this winning couple who came forward to claim this historic jackpot, and we are even happier about how this big win will impact Arizona."

Arizonans react to the major win

"That's a lot of money. I wish I could win something like that. That's why I'm here at the lottery place," said Sharon Bowser.

One $2 ticket is now worth $473.1 million, beating the Powerball at its own game, by overcoming the odds: 292 million to one.

"It's good. It helps a lot of people. And makes them want to play more," said Doug Allen.

If the winner happens to be you, congratulations. But be sure to get your ducks in a row before cashing in, according to officials.

"You should sign your ticket. You should keep it in a safe place. And you should call a lawyer, your accountant, your financial advisor," said John Gilliland of the Arizona Lottery.

And there's more luck in the East Valley. Someone in Mesa won another drawing this week worth more than $4 million.

Bowser turned $50 into $500 as our camera was rolling inside the lottery office.

"It felt good, so I got my money.. thank you," she said.

Lottery officials said the jackpot increased from earlier estimates due to strong ticket sales.

"It is a life-changing moment for this winner," Edgar said in an earlier statement. "It also means millions of dollars to our state's economy, to this winner's community, and to the vital programs and services funded by Arizona Lottery ticket sales."

A 2019 Arizona law specifies that winners of Arizona Lottery prizes of $100,000 or more automatically remain anonymous for 90 days but can choose to remain anonymous permanently.
