Tim Thurston, his daughter Abby and her son Weston lost their home to an outbreak of deadly tornadoes last December. But thanks to a group called National Disaster Photo Rescue, they have recovered beloved photographs that were blown away and thought to be lost forever.

"You walk away with nothing but what you had on," said Abby. "I mean no shoes, nothing."

The non-profit, volunteer group opened collection sites after the storm where people could bring pictures found in the debris, then scanned the photos and posted them to a Facebook group called "Lost Photos of Garland and Rowlett, TX Tornado."

The Thurstons have since moved into another house and Tim Thurston says the recovered photographs help with a fresh start.
"Its nice to have some old stuff just to look back on and just to have," Tim said. "Even if it's not in perfect shape."
