Vice President JD Vance took to social media to give his thoughts on Tuesday's midterm election results, pointing a finger at the Iran war as the primary reason why Republicans' took heavy losses in the House and Senate.

What they're saying:

"But the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone," said Vance on X.

"The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night. If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that's at least honest. But everyone knows why we lost," said Vance. "And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there."

The other side:

President Trump publicly addressed the results in a phone interview with Fox News Tuesday night. Vance remained quiet until posting his lengthy statement on X, arguing that Republicans lost voters who backed the Trump-Vance ticket in 2024 amid frustration over the war, rising costs and U.S. relations with Israel.

"The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026," said Vance.

Dig deeper:

Vance said the reasons many of those who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted in this midterm for four specific reasons; end the war, focus on cost of living/inflation, put America first, and change our relationship to Israel.

He concluded by saying he remains hopeful about our country. "Any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there."

Big picture view:

Vance's post-election analysis comes as speculation continues to mount about his own political future, looking ahead to 2028, as he's widely viewed as a potential 2028 Republican presidential contender.

Vance's comments are a shift in his public stance on the war's political consequences, previously defending aspects of the Trump administration's campaign.

The backstory:

Democrats emerged from Tuesday's midterm elections with control of both chambers of Congress, ending Republican majorities in Washington. The outcome gives Democrats greater influence over federal legislation and congressional oversight during President Donald Trump's remaining two years in office.

The results reflected widespread voter frustration over the economy, rising living costs and the ongoing war with Iran, issues Democrats emphasized throughout the campaign.

Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., reposted Vance's post with three red "100" emojis.
