DART Police are investigating a deadly train vs. pedestrian accident that happened Saturday afternoon.

Authorities say the accident happened at approximately 4:00 p.m. in Irving, just east of the Downtown Irving/Heritage Crossing Station on the TRE tracks and Nursery Rd.

According to witness accounts a woman believed to be in her mid-to-late 40s was walking south on Nursery and stopped at the crossing as a freight train went through it. She then entered the crossing while the gate arms were still down and the crossing bells and lights activated by an approaching eastbound TRE train. The eastbound train operator saw her and sounded the train horn and applied the brakes in an attempt to stop the train. Reports are she ran across the tracks but was struck by a corner of the train as it went through the intersection. She has not been identified.

DART officials say 260 passengers were on board the train at the time. No injuries were reported.

The train was halted in both directions as the investigation was conducted.

According to DART officials, the 260 passengers were moved to another train and normal operations were resumed around 7:30 p.m.

The investigation is ongoing and information will be updated as it becomes available.
